Our Community

Bike Gallery's founder, Bob Graves, taught his son and current Bike Gallery owner, Jay, about giving back to the community. Since its inception, Bike Gallery has lent its support to many community organizations. Our long history of community involvement has included ride support, race team sponsorship, and financial support to non-profit bike advocacy organizations such as the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (see below) and the Community Cycling Center —a non-profit organization dedicated to creating cycling opportunities for underprivileged children and adults.

Bike Advocacy and Alternative Transportation

Our Commitment To Bike Advocacy
We have seen remarkable progress in the 30+ years of our business and are excited about the changes we see happening today, but we know that we can continue to improve and we are committed to working hard to promote bicycles for transportation and recreation, support the groups and individuals that are striving to improve bicycle facilities, and especially, provide the products and services that support all of the folks that are moving about the city on their bikes.

Bicycle Transportation Alliance
BTAThe Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) is a non-profit membership organization working to promote bicycling and improve bicycling conditions in Oregon and SW Washington. Since 1990, the BTA has worked in partnership with citizens, businesses, community groups, government agencies and elected officials to create communities where people can meet their daily transportation needs on a bike.

Bike Gallery owner, Jay Graves, has been active with the BTA since its beginning, serving on their board for many years. However, Jay is not the only dedicated supporter of the BTA at Bike Gallery. Daniel McGinnis, Bike Gallery President and General Manager, serves currently on the board of directors of the BTA and Barb Grover, Community Outreach and Marketing Manager, has served on the Alice Awards and Auction committee, and was recognized as by the BTA as an outstanding volunteer in 2006.

Members of Bike Gallery's family have been acknowledged for promoting the use of bicycles and increasing the livability of our community, receiving recognition at the Alice Awards ceremony. In 2006, Amy Wantulok, Hollywood Bike Gallery manager, received an Alice Award. She was chosen because of her dedication to creating opportunities for women in cycling and the bike industry.

Bike Gallery believes so strongly in the BTA's mission that we donate generously, actively promote BTA membership with our customers, and reward BTA members with discounts on merchandise. We’d like to encourage you to become a member, if you haven't already. For more information or to join, visit your nearest Bike Gallery store, or visit the BTA online.

Other Bike Advocacy Groups
Other busy bicycle advocates are working hard to get more people cycling as transportation. We are proud to be able to support the following organizations in their efforts to inspire the use of alternative transportation:

Brett Jarolimek Memorial Fund

On Monday October 22 2007, Bike Gallery co-worker and team mate Brett Jarolimek was killed in a collision with a truck while riding his bike in Portland. Brett was a Portland resident and an active member of the cycling and art communities. The news of his death came as a terrible blow to all of us at the Bike Gallery, as well as to many customers and friends in the community.

Brett JarolimekThe Bike Gallery, with the support of Brett's close family and friends, has decided to establish a memorial fund in honor of Brett's life. The Brett Jarolimek Memorial Fund will be sponsored by the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA), which will administer the collection and distribution of donations under its charter as a 501 C-3 nonprofit organization.

Donations made to the Brett Jarolimek Memorial Fund will be used to support the cause of bicycle safety through strategic partnerships and direct support of projects intended to 1) enhance motorist awareness and education, 2) enhance the awareness, visibility and education of bicyclists, and 3) enable bicycle safety infrastructure projects on a selected basis. This will include funding of grassroots projects initiated by individuals in the community.

Funds collected will be managed by a committee or board of individuals who will represent the concerns of cycling safety, visibility and awareness in the Portland area. Individuals and organizations will be invited to submit proposals and grant requests for the fulfillment of specific projects that are consistent with the mission of the fund. The committee/board will meet at regular intervals to review applications, distribute funds and work on development and fundraising projects. The committee/board will also consider opportunities for strategic alliances with City and State agencies and other nonprofit organizations.

You can make a donation to the Brett Jarolimek Memorial Fund using your credit card, by clicking on the PayPal button below:

Kristy Lawhorn Memorial Giving at Providence Cancer Center

Kristy LawhornKristy Lawhorn worked for Bike Gallery and was a valued member of our family until 2002, when she lost her battle with breast cancer. During her battle, Kristy worked hard to maintain a normal life and a positive outlook; she came to work, rode her bike, and became an advocate for cancer research. We were profoundly inspired by her determination and love for life and when she passed away, continued to give to the cause that was so important to her: Portland's Providence Cancer Center. The actual funds given in her memory were used for cancer research, which, of course, continues in the new space and expanded laboratories of the new Providence Cancer Center facility in northeast Portland. We’d like to encourage you to support cancer research and patient care by giving to this cause too. For more information contact: 503-215-6186 or www.providence.org/cancer
